Color as a Tool of Symbolism in Heart of Darkness  Ã‚   Color is used very effectively as a tool of symbolism in Heart of Darkness. Colors, especially black and white, are used to symbolize evil (black) and good (white). Other colors are also used, although less often than black and white. Throughout the story, people are thought to have white souls or black souls depending on their innate â€Å"goodness† or â€Å"badness† or the role they are fulfilling at the time. The color of a person’s soul is often contrasted to the color of their skin. A black- souled, white-skinned person is thought to be evil and dishonest. â€Å"I met a white man in such an unexpected elegance of getup†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Conrad p.21). This demonstrates how a white man was not expected to be a good person. Elegance of dress was unexpected because the man was white. In comparison, a white-souled, black-skinned person is thought to be truthful and full of integrity. â€Å"An athletic black belonging to some coast tribe and educated by my poor pre decessor†¦.thought all the world of himself.† (Conrad p.45). People are described as black with hatred regardless of skin color. This is further evidence of black being used synonymously with evil. Black isn’t just used to describe evil people. â€Å"Often far away, I thought of these two, guarding the door of Darkness, knitting black wool as for a warm pall†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Conrad p. 14.) The symbolism of black wool at the door of Darkness is clearly pointing to evil, and further supports black as evil. Heath 2 Colors other than black and white are used to describe moods and attitudes past the basic good and evil. Red signifies industry. â€Å"There was a vast amount of red - good to see at any time because one knows that some real work is done in there.† (Conrad p.13). Yellow is seen as a cowardly color. â€Å"I was going into the yellow. Dead in the center.† (Conrad p.13). Pale denotes Death. It is also used this way in the Bible, â€Å"the Pale ho rse and his rider Death†, Revelations 6:8. â€Å"She came forward, all in black, with a pale head, floating towards me in the dusk. She was in mourning. It was more than a year since his death†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Conrad p. 72-73). The use of color is effective in the story for a variety of reasons. First, it is easy to understand.

They think they are too old to be able to keep up with fast paced environments which the job may call for. Many companies pass up hiring experienced older people because the younger people will work for less money because they have less experience too.Also, being old is sometimes thought of as being slow or not being able to focus on the task at hand. How does the ADEA address issues for the aging population? The Age Discrimination in Empl oyment Act (ADEA) stops any amployer from refusing to hire or fire individuals because of their age. This act pertains to persons over the age of 40.The Age Discrimination in Employment Act specifically deals with issue pertaining to compensation, employee benefit plans, health coverage, and pensions. Any action that could prohibit an individual from receiving gainful employment based on his age. For example, if an employer hires a younger person instead of an older person simply becauase they think the younger person can fulfill the job duties better, then they violation of the ADEA. What is being done to address the issues you identified? Congress has passed other laws to help lessen discrimination issues against the elderly.For example they have passed the â€Å"older workers benefit act†, as a way to further ensure the elderly will not be discriminated against. Also, every age discriminated case that is filed is required to have a 60 day investigation by the Equal Employm ent Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Most of these cases are closed for administrative reasons or no reasonable cause. Some cases are resolved before the EEOC gets involved. This story has a mix of adventure, suspense, love, and loss. All of these features are archetypes that are shown in Homer’s epic poem. Greek culture is a big part of the archetypes in this poem as well. The three archetypes that I chose are some of the most frequently seen archetypes in adventurous stories or poems. The derogatory effects of pride on human life is an idea that runs through William Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar. Caesar himself is consumed by pride, and the way that others treat him only reinforces his idea that his is the strongest man in the world, and certainly the only man fit to lead Rome. Caesar’s ambition, which was caused by his pride, convinces Brutus that, despite his love for Caesar, Caesar would only hurt Rome, and therefore must die. More than that, however, Caesar’s pride directly causes his downfall. Throughout Julius Caesar, Shakespeare shows the audience how Caesar’s pride blinds him to signs and omens that would otherwise cause him worry. Soothsayers in Ancient Rome were very well respected. Dramatic Techniques Essay Explore the Dramatic Techniques Used by J.B. Priestly in Act 3 of An Inspector Calls to Convey his Concerns and Ideas to the Audience, as well as Interest and Involve Them in his Play. What Does This Reveal About the Birling Family and Their Society?  J.B. Priestly has many concerns, but his main concerns whilst writing this play were to influence the public to take up a more socialistic approach to life. This was his concern because although the play was set in 1912, before the First World War, it was written in the 1940s after the two World Wars had taken place and he knew the outcome of the events that were mentioned during the play. For example, in Act 1, Birling says that the Titanic is unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable, but as we all know, the Titanic, which sailed about 18 months after this was said, sank near to eastern United States within transatlantic waters. Furthermore, the `Inspector` provides a key role in attempting to transform the Birlings from self-superiority, down to modesty and being humble. This effect eventually took place on some members of the family. After the first two acts, we, as the audience, have been left with many mind-boggling situations, such as:  Why was the `Inspectors` attitude the way it was?  Who did what? And why?  How did the `Inspector` know everything?  What has all this got to do with a girl committing suicide?  Priestly uses a lot of cliffhangers to good effect in his play to leave the audience in suspense and wondering what is going to happen. The `Inspector` deliberately questions the family in chronological order, and intentionally changes it when it is Erics turn, partly because he was under the influence of intoxicating liquor, but mainly because he knew that Erics mother, Mrs Birling, didnt know who he was talking about and that she would condemn him before realising that he was talking about her `perfect` son. This creates a lot of tension because, at the moment in time when Mrs Birling is being quizzed, Eric is out taking a stroll, allowing himself to sober up, before it is his turn. By this time, the audience have realised what is happening, thereby creating intense dramatic irony. Eric uses colloquialisms in his language to describe his relationship with Eva, for instance, instead of saying prostitute he says `the usual sort`, `squiffy` and `rather far gone` instead of drunk and `it` rather than saying sex. He does this because his actions have been unacceptable for a middle class man. Eva declines Erics offer of money towards the end of the relationship in a grateful manner, but Mrs Birlings evaluation of her in Act 2 when she says, She was giving herself ridiculous airs. She was claiming elaborate fine feelings and scruples that were simply absurd in a girl in her position. She said that the father was only a youngster silly and wild and drinking too much. There couldnt be any question of marrying him it would be wrong for them both. He had given her money but she didnt want to take any more money from him. All a lot of nonsense I didnt believe a word of it. was prejudiced, she did not like her, and from then on it was all one-sided and Eva could do nothing. There is a lot of tension during the call about what the outcome would be, because if he was a fake, then Mr Birlings honour may not be in jeopardy, but if he was real, then they would all have to live with the guilt for the rest of their lives. Mr Birling was the most relieved person after the call. When the telephone rings a few minutes later, Mr Birling answers and his face drops. There is a lot of tension and suspense yet again during the call, Mr Birling pauses quite a few times to increase it dramatically. He puts the phone down and looks at everybody, then reveals the news. This raises questions for the audience and leaves them with a cliffhanger. The timing of the telephone call is important because it suddenly changes the mood from joyous to shocking and frightening. A second visit from an Inspector increases the suspense and shows that somebody still needs to be taught a lesson. This makes the audience feel stunned and makes them wonder if they should or should not sympathise with the family. The family would ensure that the course of events was different next time around. The playwrights message is still relevant today so we are able to see the differences between right and wrong, confession and rejection, guilt and innocence. It has been written to show the people of today and future generations how not to live, and to avoid unwanted circumstances during their life.
